Android: how to install it and what to know
Roonly for Android comes through a Google Play testing track your manager invites you to. Keep it updated, allow background activity, and know what is iPhone first.
Roonly runs on Android phones, with two differences from the iPhone app worth knowing before your first shift: how you install it, and which features arrive on iPhone first.
Installing from Google Play
The Android app is distributed through a Google Play testing track, so it does not appear when you search the Play Store. Your manager sends you an opt-in link. Open it on your phone, accept the invitation, then install Roonly from the Play Store page the link takes you to. After that, updates arrive through Google Play like any other app.
If you installed a test build directly from a file before joining the testing track, uninstall it first. Google signs Play installs differently, and Android will refuse to install the Play version over a sideloaded one.
Keep the app updated
Update whenever Google Play offers it. Older Android versions of Roonly recorded audio in a format that transcribed poorly and would not play back in the web dashboard. Current versions record clean speech audio. If your manager says your conversations sound wrong on their side or are not being scored, check for an update before anything else.
Permissions to allow
On first launch Roonly asks for the microphone, your location, and notifications. The microphone is required to record. Location lets each conversation carry the street address where it happened. Notifications are how Roonly tells you when a recording was interrupted or an upload needs attention.
Android also manages battery use per app. If recordings stop when the screen locks, open your phone's battery settings for Roonly and allow background activity, or turn off battery optimization for the app. Roonly is built to keep recording with the screen off, but a phone set to aggressive power saving can still end it.
What is different from iPhone
- Apple Watch recording is iPhone only.
- Some features ship on iPhone first. If an article in this help center describes something you cannot find in your Android app, it is on its way to Android; ask your manager or contact support if you need it now.
- Everything about how recording, scoring, feedback, lessons and roleplay work is the same on both platforms.
If something is not working
- Check Google Play for an update to Roonly.
- Confirm the microphone permission is on in your phone's app settings.
- Allow background activity for Roonly in battery settings.
- Sign out and back in from the app's settings.
