22% of Pest Control Cancellations Happen in Month One

We looked at 2,061 cancellations at one pest control company. They cluster in two windows: the first 30 days and the first anniversary. Here is what to do in each.

Pest control customers don't cancel evenly through the year. They cancel in two windows: the first month and the first anniversary. At one pest control company, 22% of 2,061 cancellations came in the customer's first 30 days, 31% came within 90, and around the one-year mark cancellations ran about 4.4 times faster than in the months before it.

In between, it goes quiet. That quiet is the problem: most customers who leave give no warning in the months they are still paying. Here is when they cancel, what the reasons say and hide, and what an office can do in each window.

When do pest control customers cancel?

Pest control cancellations cluster at the start and at the anniversary. Across 2,061 cancellations at one company, by how long the customer had been with them:

  • First 30 days: 22% of all cancellations.
  • Days 30 to 89: 8%.
  • Months 3 to 6: 8%.
  • Months 6 to 11: 5%, the quietest stretch.
  • Months 11 to 14, around the first anniversary: 14%.
  • Months 14 to 23: 14%.
  • Around the second anniversary and later: the remaining 29%.

The anniversary window is three months long and the stretch before it five, so the pace is what matters: about 3 cancellations a day around the anniversary against fewer than 1 a day in months 6 to 11.

Why so many customers cancel in the first 30 days

The first month is when a new customer finds out whether the company does what the salesperson said. A lot of first-month cancellations happen before anything has been done at all.

  • About 1 in 4 first-month cancellations never got a first service. The record says the initial appointment was canceled or never happened: 122 of the 461 cancellations in the first 30 days.
  • Almost 4 in 10 first-month cancellations have no reason recorded, against fewer than 1 in 30 later on. The customer left before anyone asked why.
  • Customers sold at the door cancel earlier. Door-to-door sales were 73% of this company's cancellations, and 24% of those came in the first 30 days, against 14% for customers who came by referral and 9% for returning customers. That is a timing pattern within the cancellations, not a higher cancel rate: most of this company's customers are sold at the door.

A customer sold at the door on a Tuesday evening has met one person from the company. If the first service slips, the next thing they hear may be a bill.

Why customers cancel at the first anniversary

At the one-year mark the customer has a year of service behind them and a renewal or a full year of charges in front of them. It is the first time many of them weigh the whole cost.

The reasons recorded in that window are different from the first month's:

  • "Doesn't Want" is 42% of anniversary cancellations.
  • Financial reasons are 21%.
  • Moving out of the service area is 14%.

Moves can't be saved. Most of the rest are a customer who stopped seeing the value, often because nothing broke all year and they never heard what the service prevented.

"Doesn't Want" hides the real reason

Across all 2,061 cancellations, "Doesn't Want" is the most common reason, at 30%. It is a dropdown label, not a reason. It can mean the price felt high, the bugs came back, a neighbor said they skip it, or nobody from the company had been in touch since spring.

The fix costs nothing: on every cancel, ask "what changed?" and write the answer in the notes, not only the label. A quarter later you will know which of those it was, and which window to work on.

What to do in each window

The first 90 days:

  • Send a welcome text that says the customer can text this number to manage the account.
  • Confirm the first visit with a 2-hour window ("Thursday, 8 to 10 AM").
  • Check in 48 hours after the first service: did they see a difference, and do they have questions?
  • Get autopay set up by day 30.

For customers sold at the door:

  • Confirm the first service within a day of the sale.
  • Have the office call anyone whose first service isn't on the calendar within a week. A sale with no service date is already a cancellation in progress.

The first anniversary:

  • Check in 30 days before the one-year mark, with what was done this year: the visits, what the tech treated, what they kept out.
  • Ask about anything that has bothered them before the renewal, not after.

Every cancel:

  • Ask what changed, write it down, and make a real save attempt before processing it.

Where Roonly fits

Roonly's AI agent for pest control runs these touches by text inside the CRM: the welcome, the first-visit check-in, the check-in before the anniversary, and a save attempt with the office's own offers when someone asks to cancel. Anything that needs judgment goes to the office with the conversation attached.

If you want to see where your own cancellations cluster, we run this same breakdown on your data as part of a free call audit.

How we got these numbers

We analyzed 2,061 cancellations at one pest control company, canceled between July 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026, as recorded in its CRM. Tenure is the days from the customer's start date to the cancellation date. We left out internal data cleanup, quote-only records and one-time jobs. Reasons are the labels the office recorded. The company is not named.
